Gentibus CD

Unlike diskettes or other obsolete devices, CDs are still useful for storing important documents or media files. If this is your primary means of backing up data, you may find it difficult to look for a specific file in a large pile of CDs. Instead of loading countless CDs, one by one, to locate the files you need, you can use Gentibus CD to catalog their contents. The software can scan your removable drives and take a snapshot of their contents, which can be stored in a database. With its flexible search capabilities, you can instantly find out which CD contains the files you need.

Gentibus CD is distributed as a donationware application, which means that you can use it for as long as you want, without paying, but you can make a donation if you find it useful and want to support future developments. The software can be used on Windows XP, Vista and Win 7 and it can be installed in less than a minute.

The user interface presents options for scanning CDs and updating their database entries, on a toolbar, on which you can also find options for locating and retrieving selected files, bringing up their properties windows, exploring and opening them. Scanned CDs are displayed in a tree structure, on the left side of the interface and their contents are listed on the right side, just like on a standard explorer window. Additionally, you can view all scanned images, audio and video files, as well as programs, from the entire database, on different tabs.

Another navigation tab displays a series of search options. You can use them to look for any type of files or programs, images, video or audio files. You can also search for a file by its name, category, size, date or other characteristics. Once you find the file you are looking for, you can select it and hit the Locate option, on the program's toolbar, to show the file in its corresponding CD entry. If the CD is loaded, you can select one or more files and click the Retrieve option to copy them to the hard drive, in a folder of your choice.

The software is not limited to CDs. You can also take snapshots of DVDs, USB drives or other storage devices. Furthermore, you can display additional tabs, on the main user interface, if you wish to filter the database and search for other file types, such as MP3 files, icons and cursors, spreadsheets and many others.
